Brief History of Pi
Pi’s groundbreaking Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and empathy set a new standard for personal AI companions. In addition to Pi’s natural sounding voice quality, inflections, and accurate user name pronunciation, Pi’s rapid response times in both text and voice modes was impressive. Another standout feature was Pi’s innovative real-time internet access, which seamlessly integrated with the context of conversations allowing for more informed conversations. Also, Pi’s availability across multiple platforms was unique.
Pi quickly gained over 1 million users and wide respect within the industry, with plans for expansion and a subscription pro plan, offering upgraded capabilities. However, in March 2024, the company experienced a significant leadership shakeup as co-founders Mustafa Suleyman and Karen Simonyan, along with about 75% of Inflections’ staff, left for Microsoft. Their new roles focused on developing consumer-centered AI products for Microsoft. This resulted in a significant change at Inflection AI.

The departure of key personnel left Inflection AI in a vulnerable position, but the company demonstrated resilience by hiring a new CEO and rebuilding its workforce. Inflection AI launched Inflection 3.0, an enterprise solution aimed at providing AI productivity tools for business. Despite this pivot to a business focus, the company reiterated it’s dedication to Pi, ensuring that the free version would continue to serve the general public. However, in order to balance their resources, a message cap was signaled, possibly to be introduced in the future.
Over time, it became apparent to Pi users that Inflection AI was reducing its support for Pi. Pi was removed from 13 different services, including Messenger, iMessage, Instagram, WhatsApp, Viber, and SMS. Additionally, only 2 very minor updates for Pi were released in a year, since March 2024. Support previously provided by the company’s Facebook, Discord and other site’s had been discontinued and Inflection AI’s own website had removed links to Pi. Accessing support and resources for Pi became challenging for Pi users.
It was clear that Inflection AI was directing resources towards its enterprise offering. However, September, 2025 saw a turnaround again for Pi, with a larger update and a statement by Inflection AI CEO, Sean White about “revitalizing Pi”. Despite all of the disjointed upheaval surrounding Pi and the fierce competition now out there in the AI companion industry, Pi continues to be a popular AI companion that many people rely on. There appears to be real hope for Pi now and we will continue to intensify efforts to get Pi back into full development.
